PFC: What the real difference is between Advanced and Basic Knock
For quite some time, people have wondered what the difference is between Advanced and Basic Knock on the Power FC. The short answer is: they are both the same and different.
To go into further detail, both Adnavced and Basic Knock (although this applies to other parameters as well) both log the same knock sensor. So technically both show you the same thing.
The difference between the two comes from how the Datalogit polls data to generate logs. The data for knock is asynchronous, meaning that the time interval between successive data point is not even. The Basic and Advanced fuctions are redundant, so the way the datalogit will log knock will go like this:
1 - timestamp
2 - Advanced
3 - Basic
And this will repeat. So knock is getting polled two out of every three times in a cycle, so if X represents a logged data point and _ represents no logged data, the log of knock will have the following form:
_XX_XX_XX_XX_XX_ and so forth.
So the reason that Advaned and Basic appear different is that they are polled at different times. Both should be looked at when reviewing a map.
As far as the best way to look at knock in order to make the most sense of the data, the Graph function is the most useful. Here is a graph of
knock over a 3rd gear pull, showing both Advanced and Basic knock.
